STUDIO
LOCATION: THE BARN IS SET AMONG THE CAHA MOUNTAINS OVERLOOKING LOUGH FADA AND KENMARE BAY, 3 KMS FROM ARDGROOM VILLAGE, A PRETTY VILLAGE WITH A PUB THAT SERVES GOOD LOCAL FISH AND THE LOCAL POST OFFICE CUM DELICATESSEN/WINE SHOP/INTERNET CAFÉ AND TOURIST INFO.
IT IS 15KM FROM CASTLETOWN BERE, THE LARGEST FISHING PORT IN THE SOUTH WITH LOTS OF NICE PUBS ESPECIALLY MC CARTHY’S WHERE THERE ARE REGULAR TRADITIONAL MUSIC SESSIONS, THE SARAH WALKER GALLERY WHICH DOUBLES AS THE HIGH TIDE CLUB MUSIC VENUE.
TRANSPORT: THERE IS A PRIVATE BUS THAT DEPARTS EACH DAY FROM CORK CITY AT 18.00 HRS. AND WILL DROP PEOPLE TO THE DOOR TWO HOURS LATER. ONCE HERE THERE ARE BICYCLES AVAILABLE AND PLENTY OF WALKS INCLUDING THE MARKED BEARA WAY .
ACCOMMODATION : THE CONVERTED BARN SLEEPS FOUR WITH TWO SEPARATE BEDROOMS (ONE ROOM COULD BE USED AS STUDY OR STUDIO SPACE) AND A BATHROOM AND KITCHEN OVERLOOKING A VEGETABLE GARDEN AND THE CAHA MOUNTAINS.

We designed the barn to be fully flexible to suit the individual needs of the artist in residence.
The space has foldaway Kitchen and Worktops plus two double sofa beds .
OUR STORY
Dereenacappara is situated on the remote Beara Peninsula, really more of an island as until the 1940s, access to the area was by ferry from Bantry or on the rough tracks over the mountains.
It is a dramatic landscape where the Caha mountain range runs along the spine of the peninsula and the wild Atlantic borders it on all sides.
It is geologically and archaeologically interesting with plenty of features including copper mines and standing stones throughout the area.
It is an elemental experience living here on a farm consisting of sixteen acres with access to the surrounding one thousand plus acres of commonage with lakes and seashore.
The hosts are committed to the ecology of the environment and work towards maintaining the ecosystem of the local landscape.
We use environmentally friendly sources of energy to power the farm/residency.
To date we have solar panels for hot water and a 6 kw wind turbine to supply electricity.
We believe that a relationship with nature and immersing oneself elementally through walking the hills, wild swimming etc. can change your outlook and tap into your creative consciousness in a special way.
The hosts are there to help and encourage and share local knowledge as well as their extensive library and music collection.
Dereenacappara’s residencies can offer a change of pace from your normal routine, allowing time for problem solving, support through constructive feedback or the opportunity to try out ideas on the hosts, one an artist and sometimes gardener www.friedameaney.com and the other a cabinet maker and forest manager www.handsonfurniture.ie.
Each artist’s needs are taken into consideration and catered for to the best of our ability.

Support: You will be offered a welcoming dinner on the evening of your arrival where you will meet your hosts. The residency consists of self-catering accommodation, studio space, garden, WIFI, bikes, kayaks, sauna, access to woodland and walks on commonage that includes bog and lake.
Organic vegetables from garden when available plus guidance in foraging local herbs and seaweeds.
We also have a diverse collection of books for reference purposes : Natural History, Art, Philosophy, Literature etc.

Transport :
Harringtons Bus leaves Parnell Place, Cork City at 6 pm and arrives back in Ardgroom at 8.30 pm daily Mon to Sat (ex Thurs.) It departs from Ardgroom at 7.30 am and arrives in Cork City just after 10 am.
A car is useful to explore the area but not essential. The nearest shop/café/ PO and pub is 3 km away.

STUDIO Description:
The barn at Dereenacappara is a cosy, intimate and flexible space consisting of two rooms, kitchenette and bathroom and can accommodate two - three persons or provide a workspace and bedroom for one person.
The emphasis is on the environment : we are surrounded by views of the Caha mountains and unspoilt bogland leading to a mile long lake, Lough Fada with access to kayaks and within walking distance of Kenmare Bay.

Costs: 250 euro per week.

The name ‘Dereenacappara’ means holding of the oaks and Hans has planted more than 12,000 trees on the land over the last 20 years. We manage the holding by sustainable methods where possible and are hugely aware of protecting and encouraging wildlife on the land. Lots of areas are left to go wild and we avoid cutting grassy areas until after they have been allowed to produce seed for birds and provide habitat for other wildlife.

Dereenacappara’s residencies can nurture the growth of seedling ideas by giving you the space to unselfconsciously experiment and play.
Research
There is a large library available for all artists. This covers a wide range of topics including art, natural history, geology, travel and environmental science as well as a good stock of classics.

1 week = 250 euro per person
non refundable deposit of 20% paid at time of booking.
Remainder to be paid 90 days before arrival.
In the case of cancellation the payment can be transferred for the cost of another period in the same year.

NEWS
In November we will be accepting applications for residencies for 2024. The months
February and May are available. May is a magical time here on the holding with foxgloves giving a spectacular display as they return to the woods and surrounding areas.
